Adolescent & teen therapy

Why is my MFT trainee program so successful?
Because I strongly believe in the following through principals that support the ethical guidelines of the therapeutic profession.

1. Collaboration With Parents

When working with children and adolescents, parent collaboration matters. While confidentiality is important, therapists can often encourage and obtain permission from the child to involve parents in supportive ways. In my experience working in schools and therapy settings, most youth are open to parent involvement when approached thoughtfully. Collaboration strengthens communication, connection, and gives parents tools to better support their child.

2. Open Discussion About Diagnosis

Clients deserve honest conversations about diagnosis. Too often, people receive a diagnosis for insurance purposes without ever discussing it with their therapist. Diagnosis is not a dirty word — it can provide insight, guide treatment, and help clients better understand themselves and their needs. Therapy should include transparent discussions about what a therapist is seeing clinically and how that informs treatment.

3. Collaborative Treatment Goals

Therapy goals should be developed collaboratively, not decided solely by the therapist. Clients should clearly understand what they are working toward and how progress will be measured. Without defined goals, it becomes difficult to know whether therapy is effective or when treatment may be complete. Even goals like wanting support, processing emotions, or improving relationships are valid and should be openly discussed and agreed upon together.

Who Adolescent & Teen Therapy is for

Teen therapy may be helpful for adolescents and teens who are experiencing emotional, behavioral, or relational challenges, including those who feel overwhelmed by the pressures of school, relationships, or expectations placed on them.

Parents often reach out when they notice changes in their teen’s mood, behavior, or ability to cope—but therapy can also be a proactive space for teens who want additional support or a neutral place to talk.

common reasons families seek teen therapy

Adolescent and teen therapy can support teens who are experiencing:

Anxiety, worry, or persistent stress

Emotional overwhelm or mood changes

Academic pressure, perfectionism, or burnout

Difficulty expressing emotions or needs

Changes in family dynamics or relationships

Identity development or self-esteem concerns

Life transitions or periods of uncertainty

what therapy looks like

Therapy with adolescents and teens is collaborative, developmentally informed, and paced in a way that feels safe and manageable. Sessions may focus on helping teens better understand their emotions, strengthen coping skills, and make sense of their experiences within the context of their relationships and environment.

Our clinicians work to create a space where teens feel respected, supported, and heard—without pressure to “fix” or change who they are. Therapy often includes a balance of conversation, reflection, and skill-building, depending on the teen’s needs and goals.

Supporting Parents and families

Parent involvement can be an important part of adolescent and teen therapy. When appropriate, therapy may include parent sessions or check-ins to support communication, increase understanding, and help parents feel more confident in how they support their teen.

We recognize that parenting a teen can bring up feelings of uncertainty, grief, or self-doubt—especially when reality doesn’t match expectations. Therapy can be a space to explore these experiences while strengthening the parent-teen relationship and overall family system.
